Harvard Square

30 minute walk OR 2 Red Line Stops towards Alewife (Harvard)

It is home to the oldest university in America, George Washington took command of the Continental Army here, in the 19th century it was a center of abolitionist fervor, and in the 20th century it was famous for anti-war protests. One thing that has remained true through all these periods of time is the connection between Harvard Square and the printed word. Nearly from the beginning, Harvard Square has been a home and a gathering place for authors, poets, publishers, printers, teachers students and booksellers. Three hundred and seventy one years ago the first printing press in this hemisphere was carried across the Atlantic with the first American printer, Stephen Daye. Where did they set up shop? In Harvard Square, of course. When Governor John Winthrop crossed the Atlantic on the Arbella, one of his shipmates was Anne Bradstreet, who would later become a Harvard Square resident and the first published American poet. The Daye Press was replaced by the University Press and Bradstreet was followed by giants of 19th and 20th century American poetry such as Longfellow, Lowell, T.S. Eliot and e. e. cummings all of whom lived through and loved the books of Harvard Square. The archival pages of the Harvard Square Business Association reveal many different chapters in the History of Harvard Square. Many roads, many lives, and many authors have interstected at the area we now call the "Super Crosswalk!" We invite you to view these pages and send us your own contribution and experiences of business in Harvard Square over the last 100 years. - harvardsquare.com

  • Ten Tables Cambridge

5 Craigie Street Circle , Cambridge, MA 02139
    617-388-8324
    View Map

Ten tables is concientious both in its business and its food Any establishment can define itself as a "neighborhood" spot by its immediate location or surroundings. But being a true neighborhood place requires that one also be good neighbors, by supporting the efforts of local partners and by welcoming you to feel as comfortable as you are in your own home.

During the summer season, try their fish stew that combines ingredients from many of their farmers. Woodbury Shellfish of Wellfleet provides littleneck clams; garlic, greens, and herbs come from Allandale Farm in Brookline; the potatoes are from Parker Farm in Lunenburg. Likewise, during the fall and winter seasons you can bet on delicious root vegetables from Allandale Farm that they serve roasted and caramelized with their all-natural, humanely raised, grass-fed beef from select Massachusetts farms.

For starters, they shop like Europeans: close to home and in the community. Instead of an exhaustive, static selection of options that may require ingredients from far and wide, their smaller, more mindful menu is jam-packed with handmade delectables that draw upon fresh ingredients from carefully selected local purveyors. Their menu isn't based upon whim; it's built with deference to seasonal rhythms of what's locally fresh and available, wild and organic, and consistent with their commitment to the highest of quality standards.

The beverages at Ten Tables keep to this philosophy as well. They create all of the ingredients that they mix with spirits. Their wine list constantly evolves, giving them the opportunity to share the creations of small, family vineyards that practice organic or biodynamic winemaking. Similarly, they select brewers whose commitment to their craft creates beers to complement nearly any meal they serve. They even have their own signature TT Brew, a tasty ale created for them by the Berkshire Brewing Company in South Deerfield, MA.

They also strive to minimize their neighborhood impact however they can. Rather than bringing another loud, dirty delivery truck to their sites, their produce and dairy deliveries arrive daily via Metro Pedal Power, a bike delivery service serving Boston and Cambridge neighborhoods. They're doing thier part to help our neighbors breathe a little more easily.

At the oyster bar on the lower level of the antique building (a National Historic Landmark "where Daniel Webster drank many a toddy in his day"), try excellent fish chowder, oyster stew, or the cold shellfish sampler to start. Follow with a broiled or grilled dish such as scrod or salmon, or perhaps fried seafood or grilled pork loin. A "shore dinner" of chowder, steamers or mussels, lobster, corn, and potatoes is an excellent introduction to local favorites. For dessert, try gingerbread with whipped cream. A plaque marks John F. Kennedy's favorite booth (no. 18), where he often sat to read the Sunday papers. -- Frommer's Travel Guide
