The Stuart Elliot Madnick Information Quality (IQ) Best Paper Award was established by the Board of Directors of the International Conference on Information Quality (ICIQ) in 2006 to encourage high-quality papers to be published in the premier ICIQ conference. An initial endowment was provided by Symbolic Systems Inc., Citizant, and the MIT Information Quality program.

The award was named to recognize the distinguished contributions by Stuart Madnick, the John Norris Maguire Professor of Information Technology, MIT  Sloan School of Management and Professor of Engineering Systems, MIT School of Engineering for his life-time dedication to the field. Prof. Madnick pioneered the concept of cloud computing and information utility in the 1980’s (through his INFOPLEX research funded by the Office of Naval Research), Composite Information Systems (CIS) and Context Interchange (COIN) research initiatives for data integration and data exchange in the 1990’s. Since late 1980’s, Madnick has been a major driving force in establishing the data and information quality (DQ/IQ) field in various efforts through his Total Data Quality Management (TDQM) Program at MIT Sloan School of Management and the MIT Information Quality Program at the MIT Engineering Systems Division. In 2006, Prof. Madnick in conjunction with Prof. Yang Lee proposed and received approval from the Publication Board of the Association of Computing Machinery (ACM) to launch the first, premier ACM Journal of Data and Information Quality.

Since 2006, all papers accepted for presentation at the ICIQ Conference compete for the Madnick Award in a double-blind review. In addition to the US$1,000, the best papers are fast-tracked to the ACM Journal of Data and Information Quality for publication.
